INTERVIEW 5158 RECORDS How did 5158 Records begin? Back in 1999, I was given tunes from Hooligan Soul (Pab & G-Swift) and a new artist by the name of Skyver. I started playing some of their tunes along with some of the one's I'd been producing as they were all getting really strong responses from the dance floor. I started spreading the word of a fresh local label - 5158 Records Australia - named after the suburb I grew up in and where I found my love for music. The label had a lot of interest amongst dnb heads who gave production a go for the first time - the likes of Rummage, Lawrie-B, etheory & Technine etc decided to give dnb production a go; delivering some sensational tunes! Other producers like Djon, Khem, Patch, Fiction & EVN already had been making beats and generously handed tunez over to the label supporting up n coming artists. Word spread across the country, I recal giving El Hornet a cd compilation when he was in Adelaide years ago around the time of ADNB Vol.2 and he mentioned to me he had just joined a group in Perth called Pendulum, drum'n'bass was truly gathering momentum. In 2006 we were voted best local label at the SA Dance Music Awards - it has really come along way even since then.
What vinyl releases are out currently? We've just launched the "Southcoast [double] EP" featuring etheory, Skyver, Djon, Well Being and myself [Mark7] and is on shelves in January through L.O.A.D Media. It's been quite awhile in the making now but finally it's out there *phew*. The four tunes on it are well know around the clubs 'Like the Sun', 'Gimme Sumthing', 'Adjust your dreams accordingly' and 'Your Jealousy VIP'. It's been ages in the making cus we wanted to do it properly and with patience managed to pick up a distribution contract through L.O.A.D. Media - a world wide distribution contract which we're stoked about. I attribute the greater majority of the success of this release to both Luke (etheory) for his incredibly hard work with production and graphics along with Jarod (Mr.S) who were instrumental in hooking us up with manufacturing and distribution deals. Along with with this release, we had Phetsa's RMX of Gimme Sumthing come out on Technique records - double pack, which also featured on the Street Technique CD along with tunez from Roni Size, Bad Company, J Magic, Simon Bassline Smith, Drum Sound, Mark7, ethoery, Skyver, Djon etc.. This is one of our true success stories right there...
What's in the pipeline? We have some singles coming out this year, tracks from Mark7 & Etheory, we've got some new bits from Skyver and Djon along with tunes from other artists on the label such as G-Swift, Well Being, Rummage, Lawrie B, Technine and many more...
