Wellington, New Zealand based DJ & producer Nanotek aka Mark Christiansen is one of the fastest rising talents of the drum & bass scene. With a background firmly rooted in metal and industrial music, Nanotek's sound draws inspiration from Public Enemy and Peter Tosh to Ministry and Meshuggah. At home amongst the darker end of the drum & bass spectrum, Nanotek started his musical journey playing guitar and drums in metal bands, before discovering industrial and electronica. Attending his first rave introduced him to jungle / drum & bass and he was instantly inspired by the possibilities of this new sound.
Moving to New Zealand's capital city proved a massive turning point for the direction of his music, where he was introduced to artists like Photek, Dom & Roland and Dylan. It was around this time that Nanotek began to realise the power of the dark side. Focussing more on his production, Nanotek's sound progressed in leaps and bounds and before long was attracting a large amount of attention amongst New Zealand's drum & bass heads.
An invite from Wellington's Noise Enthusiast crew to headline a local edition of their night 'Descend' progressed to support slots opening for Tech Itch and Limewax. Meeting with these key exponents of dark, brutal drum & bass further inspired Nanotek to push his production harder and invest in some studio monitors. Some might say those monitors are worth their weight in gold as in the end of 2006, Nanotek signed his tune 'Nightwatch' to Germany's Intransigent Digital.
Shortly after it was released however, opportunity came knocking in the form of an AIM conversation with Dylan of Freak Recordings, offering him a chance to be part of the Freak family. With 'Acid Burn' and 'Deadly Force' out now on Obscene, 'The Vengeful' on Intransigent, plus more releases forthcoming on Freak and Tech Itch Recordings, Nanotek's future in drum & bass is looking very dark indeed.
